GEORGE KOHLRIESER is an organizational and clinical psychologist. He is also a police psychologist and hostage negotiator whose focus is on aggression management, hostage negotiations, and leadership in crisis situations. In the course of his work, he personally was taken hostage four times, once in a hospital emergency room, and three times in homes during domestic violence disputes. Each time using leadership skills, he successfully negotiated his way out.

He is professor of leadership and organizational behavior at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), one of the world's leading business schools, and the director of its High Performance Leadership Program, an intense five-day program especially designed for experienced senior executives.

Dr. Kohlrieser has worked with the police, the military and humanitarian organizations in such hotspots as Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Croatia, before and after the war, as well as with police departments and academies in the United States, The Netherlands, Germany, France, and India. In all, his work on leadership, conflict resolution management, and negotiation has spanned some eighty-five countries in North and South America, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

His research, teaching, and consulting activities, which focus on high-performance leadership and teamwork, conflict and change management, dialogue and negotiation, coaching, stress management, work-life balance, and personal and professional development, incorporate the lessons learned as a psychologist and hostage negotiator. Professor Kohlrieser completed his doctorate at Ohio State University, where he wrote his dissertation on cardiovascular recovery of law enforcement officials following high-stress situations. In this and other research, he has made significant contributions to our understanding of the roles self-mastery and social dialogue play in helping leaders sustain high performance.

In May 2006, he served as a presenter and facilitator at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East, which was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and other leading newspapers and magazines. "Matters of the Mind," his own highly acclaimed radio call-in talk show in the United States, ran for over ten years.
